Morocco’s Electricity Output Climbs 6.1% Through October 2025 as Demand Hits Multi-Year High

Morocco’s electricity sector continued to show strong performance in 2025, with national power generation rising by 6.1% during the first ten months of the year. This is a notable improvement compared to the 2.2% growth recorded in the same period last year, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to expand its energy capabilities and support economic activity.

The increase in production was mainly supported by higher contributions from both public and private operators. Private producers recorded a 7.7% improvement in their electricity output, while the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) increased its production by 7.2%. There was also significant growth from nationally authorized third-party producers, whose contribution jumped by 45.1%, highlighting the growing role of diversified sources in meeting national energy needs.

Electricity consumption also saw a strong rise. Net demand climbed by 7.5% by the end of October 2025, reaching the highest level seen in the last twelve years. This surge is linked to the recovery of industrial and commercial activities and the increasing energy use in households across the country. Stronger demand often signals economic growth, but it also places pressure on the national grid, pushing the country to secure additional energy resources.

To help cover demand peaks and maintain supply continuity, Morocco increased electricity imports by 26.2% over the same period. Imports have become a key support mechanism as domestic consumption rises faster than capacity expansion. On the other hand, electricity exports declined sharply by 30.9%, indicating that the priority is now shifting more toward fulfilling local needs rather than selling surplus energy abroad.

Even with this progress, Morocco continues to work on strengthening renewable energy performance as part of its long-term sustainability strategy. Although renewable production can fluctuate due to weather conditions, the country remains focused on expanding solar and wind projects to reduce reliance on imported energy, improve energy security, and maintain a cleaner power mix in the years ahead.

Overall, the latest figures show a rapidly evolving energy sector. Morocco is producing more electricity, consuming more electricity, and gradually building a more diverse and secure system. With rising demand and an expanding economy, the country is expected to continue investing in generation capacity, grid upgrades, and green energy solutions to keep powering its growth and development.
